The underrated stock survey! Submit your picks for the community to track

Following on the previous tracking post (http://redd.it/i2mmzg) and the highly upvoted request from DJ-Ascii , I've set up this post for another round of underrated or undervalued stock picks.
As before, let us know what stock you believe is underrated and a consistent winner that has done well for you, or you believe will do well going forward.
In order to make this easier to track please use the following guidelines for submitting.
  1. Only one submission per comment. You can make multiple comments, but please only submit one stock per comment.
  2. Please include at least the ticker and the company name. Feel free to explain why you think this is a good stock.
I'll add these new picks alongside the old survey so as to update you on each portfolio over time. Don't worry about any overlaps.
Edit 1: I've compiled everyone who has posted so far, but I'll look out for any final additions tomorrow. The list will then be locked EOD on Friday the 7th of August, and all prices will start from there.
Edit 2: All picks have now been locked down and consolidated into the list below. Stocks are sorted in alphabetical order of their company name and the ID corresponds to the approximate order in which they were submitted. The next update will be in 30 days.

End of day summary - 09/11

The Dow rose 131.06, or 0.48%, to 27,665.64, the Nasdaq lost 66.05, or 0.60%, to 10,853.55, and the S&P 500 advanced 1.78, or 0.05%, to 3,340.97.
Traders at /thewallstreet cheered as volatility returned to the stock market.
The major averages finished Friday's trading in mixed fashion, as dip buyers provided support for the Dow and the continued tech selloff made the Nasdaq the laggard once again. The chances for another round of fiscal stimulus ahead of the election were hurt yesterday after Democrats stopped the passage of the "skinny" GOP package, but the U.S. economy looks poised for a strong rebound in Q3, corporate earnings continue to largely overshoot pessimistic forecasts and the Fed remains "all in," leaving investors to mull the cross-currents.
Similar to the days before, today's price action was technically-oriented given the absence of market-moving news and the losses in stocks like AAPL, -1.3%, AMZN, -1.9%, and MSFT, -0.7% on no specific corporate news. Apple shares fell 7.4% this week.
The difference today was that their losses were offset by relative strength in the cyclical sectors, namely industrials (+1.4%), materials (+1.3%), and financials (+0.8%). Still, when Apple and Amazon are down more than 1.0%, there must be more winners than losers to make a meaningful difference.
There were more of the latter on Friday, as declining issues outpaced advancing issues at the NYSE and Nasdaq. The information technology (-0.8%), consumer discretionary (-0.3%), and communication services (-0.3%) sectors ended the day in negative territory due to their exposure to the mega-cap stocks.
Interestingly, the S&P 500 was down as much as 0.9% intraday and fell below its 50-day moving average (3322). A broad rebound in the afternoon, however, helped the benchmark index turn positive and close above the key technical level.
In TikTok news, President Trump said that the deadline established for China's ByteDance to sell video-sharing service TikTok's U.S. operations would not be extended, Reuters reported. "It'll either be closed up or they'll sell it," the president told reporters, adding, "There will be no extension of the TikTok deadline." MSFT in partnership with WMT and Oracle have been seen as the leading suitors to purchase TikTok's operations in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Subsequently, Reuters reported that Chinese officials are so opposed to a forced sale of TikTok's U.S. operations that they would prefer to see the app shut down in the U.S. over that conclusion. Reuters noted that China was willing, if needed, to use revisions it made to a technology exports list on Aug. 28 to delay any deal reached by ByteDance.
Electric vehicle hopeful NKLA continued its fight this morning with a short-seller, which now appears to be "short-sellers." Nikola issued a statement in response to claims made about the company by activist short-seller Hindenburg Research yesterday, calling the firm's report "a hit job for short sale profit driven by greed." Nikola, which added that it has "nothing to hide and we will refute these allegations," announced that it has retained law firm Kirkland & Ellis to evaluate potential legal recourse and intends to bring the actions of the short-seller, together with evidence and documentation, to the attention of the SEC. Following the company's press release regarding the response, Andrew Left's Citron Research said via Twitter, "Congrats to Hindenburg for exposing what appears to be a total fraud with $NKLA. Citron will cover half of all legal expenses. You can't SLAPP the truth away. Explains why Milton sold at $10 this June $NKLA response warrants an SEC investigation to maintain integrity of EV mkt." After having dropped 11% on Thursday, Nikola shares fell a further 14.5%.
Meanwhile, CNBC reported that AAPL has updated its App Store guidelines ahead of the release of iOS 14, with one major revision relating to game streaming services. The tech giant said in its revised guidelines that services such as Google Stadia (GOOG) and Microsoft xCloud are explicitly permitted, though under the condition that games offered in the service must be downloaded directly from the App Store, not from an all-in-one app.
Among the noteworthy gainers was Shares of ORCL, which was in focus after the company reported what Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow called a "surprisingly strong beat" and growth on licenses despite the continued macro uncertainty. NOG, which rose 1.3% after acquiring interests in the Delaware Basin and raising Q3 production guidance. Also higher was CX, which gained 8.3% in New York after Morgan Stanley analyst Nikolaj Lippmann upgraded the stock to Overweight from Equal Weight.
Among the notable losers was AMRS, which dropped 25.8% after responding to a lawsuit filed by Lavvan against the company for patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation. Also lower was CHWY, which declined 9.8% after reporting some cats have tried to take over the company with whiteclaws.
Despite a blowout fiscal Q4 report, PTON were 4.2% lower following last night's from the fitness products and services provider.
Elsewhere stocks were higher, with the Shanghai composite up 0.79% to around 3,260.35 while the Shenzhen component rose 1.57% to about 12,942.95. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index advanced 0.78% to end its trading day at 24,503.31.

Currency

The U.S. Dollar Index (93.35, +0.01, unch) reclaimed its overnight loss, gaining 0.7% for the week.

Treasury

U.S. Treasuries ended the abbreviated week with modest gains across the curve. The cash session started with some light selling for the second day in a row, but the market recovered from the early dip with ease.

Commodity

Gold slipped on Friday on a lack of further stimulus from the European Central Bank and the U.S. government, but for the week the safe-haven metal was set to end higher. Crude remained on track for a second weekly drop as investors expected a global glut to persist if demand weakens further with rising COVID-19 cases in some countries.

Crypto

Bitcoin is struggling to gather upside traction despite repeated defense of support at $10,000. The top cryptocurrency’s sell-off from the August high of $12,476 looks to have come to a halt near $10,000 over the past seven days.

YTD

  • FAAMG + some penny stocks +21.0% YTD
  • Spoos +3.4% YTD
  • Old man -3.1% YTD
  • Russy -10.3% YTD

CPI

Total CPI increased 0.4% m/m while core CPI, which excludes food and energy, also rose 0.4%. Those gains left total CPI up 1.3% yyr and core CPI up 1.7% yyr.
The key takeaway from the report, which featured the largest increase in the index for used cars and trucks (+5.4%) since March 1969, is that the increase in the all items index was broad-based; nonetheless, annual inflation rates are still running well below 2.0%, so there is still more noise than bothersome policy signal in the August report.

IBM Rockets

For Trading October 9th
Solid Day
IBM Soars, DPZ Crushed
Today’s market was just a good, old-fashioned day without any major moves in the indexes, no earth-shattering tweets or end of days prognostications. I didn’t have any power, cable or phone last night so besides not putting out my Daily Note or closing comment, I missed the big debate. Judging by the reports I heard today, all I missed was the fly on Pence’s head! The DJIA was +122.06 (.43%), NASDAQ +56.38 (.50%), S&P 500 +27.38 (.80%), the Russell was the big winner again +17.51 (1.09%) and the Transports +72.54 (.62%) and a new all-time high! The internals were good with NYSE 3:1 and NASDAQ 2:1 positive and all I can say is that it was very a very “Goldilocks” kind of day.
Looking at adding NEM and GLD calls, and a reentry into CVS and UNG calls probably...
Tonight’s closing comment video: https://youtu.be/lXD_OB9CrYU
SECTORS: There was good news for holders of Eaton Vance (EV) being taken over by Morgan Stanley (MS) for about $7 billion in cash and stock. MS was -2.20 premarket but right after the open it started back up and finished $49.35 +.64, and since it included stock, the rise sent EV higher to close $60.78 +19.84 (48.4%). IBM also had news that sent it higher. They gave guidance and then announced that they are going to split the company up and make the pieces “pure plays” in an effort to get a better valuation for the parts. It looked great pre-market but by the open it had given up about 1/3 of the gains and finished the day up $7.42 (6%) after the early market up 12%. Same situation with REGN, trading up to $618 or so +$26, but the stock never made it there when the real market opened…and then traded back to $598 and closed $599.70 +8.00, near the lows, but still ahead 1.24%. On the downside, the DISASTER DU JOUR, was a name that I wrote about last week, WWR, Westwater Resources, which went from $1.52 to $14.50 on news that Mr. Trump had signed an executive order relating to securing “rare earth” and critical minerals last week. Wall Street Breakfast: Volatile Week Ends In Quad Witching Session

U.S. equity futures held up overnight following another selloff on Wall Street that was led by major tech names. Contracts tied to the Dow and S&P 500 are hugging the flatline, while Nasdaq futures pared recent losses by climbing 0.6%. Mixed messaging around a potential coronavirus vaccine, as well as the passage of further fiscal stimulus, weighed on the market, while investors are gearing up for consumer sentiment data set for release at 10 a.m. ET. Don't forget that it's also quad witching day, which refers to the simultaneous expiration of market index futures, stock futures, market index options and stock options. "These days tend to get a lot of press for all of the volume they create, but historically they are nearly always a non-event," said Ryan Detrick, senior market strategist at LPL Financial.
Spending deal to avoid government shutdown
While there may be disagreement over another round of coronavirus relief, lawmakers are aiming to unveil a bipartisan spending bill today to avert a government shutdown on Oct. 1. The "clean" legislation, largely devoid of any controversial measures, should keep the government funded into mid-December. "I don't think anybody wants to be responsible for shutting down the government on the eve of an election in the middle of a pandemic, so it's a rare outbreak of common sense on both sides," said Rep. Tom Cole (R., Okla.), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee.
New round of farm aid
"Starting next week my administration is committing an additional $13B in relief to help farmers recover from the China virus," President Trump announced a campaign rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin. The new aid is the second tranche of money issued as part of the Trump administration's Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. In April, the administration unveiled $19B in relief for the agriculture sector under the CARES Act, including $16B in direct payments to farmers and ranchers and $3B in mass purchases of dairy, meat and produce.
Fed mulls extension of bank dividend curbs
Due to heightened economic uncertainty, the Federal Reserve is considering extending its caps on banks' dividends and stock repurchases for the rest of the year. The U.S. central bank made the announcement along with its release of hypothetical scenarios for the second round of stress tests that it's requiring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike an earlier round of stress tests this year, the Fed will release the results of the tests for each of the 33 lenders, rather than providing aggregate results for the group.
Sub-zero rates
The Bank of England held its benchmark policy rate at 0.1% on Thursday, but indicated it could cut interest rates below zero for the first time in its 326-year history. While recent domestic economic data has been a bit stronger than expected, it's "unclear how the economy will perform further out," according to the Monetary Policy Committee. Another major risk facing the U.K. economy relates to the post-Brexit trade discussions between the U.K. and the EU, which have recently soured.
Terms of a TikTok deal
The Trump administration spent Thursday reviewing proposals on the TikTok-Oracle (NYSE:ORCL) partnership, which currently has many moving parts. TikTok owner ByteDance (BDNCE) agreed to list the video-sharing app on a U.S. stock exchange, which could happen within a year, though there are still concerns over whether the Chinese parent would be allowed to retain a majority stake in the new company. Meanwhile, shares in China's Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY) tumbled into the U.S. closing bell following reports that its investments are drawing new national security attention.
Exchange dealmaking
Seeing off competing bids from Deutsche Borse (OTCPK:DBORY) and Switzerland's SIX, the London Stock Exchange (OTCPK:LNSTY) is in exclusive talks to sell Borsa Italiana to France's Euronext (OTCPK:EUXTF). Offloading the Milan stock exchange would help LSE achieve regulatory remedies for its $27B purchase of data provider Refinitiv, which is owned by Blackstone (NYSE:BX) and Thomson Reuters (NYSE:TRI). The deal is politically sensitive in Rome because of concerns about who could take control of Borsa Italiana's bond platform, which handles trading of Italy's government debt.
New COVID-19 restrictions across Europe
Targeted lockdowns and local restrictions are returning to Europe as the region tries to avoid broad economic damage amid a surge in coronavirus cases. "Weekly cases have now exceeded those reported when the pandemic first peaked in Europe in March," the WHO's regional director for Europe Hans Kluge told an online news conference. "Although these numbers reflect more comprehensive testing, it also shows alarming rates of transmission across the region." Pubs and restaurants must shut early and household mixing has been limited in northeast England, while social gatherings of more than six people have been banned across the country. French authorities are meanwhile preparing tighter restrictions in several cities, while Spain's Madrid has moved to "reduce mobility and contacts" in areas with high infection rates. Go Deeper: Israel becomes first developed country to enforce a second nationwide shutdown.
Pandemic closures see restaurants hit the hardest
About 60% of businesses that have closed their doors during the coronavirus pandemic will never reopen, and restaurants have suffered the most, according to new data from Yelp. The National Restaurant Association also said this week that 100,000 restaurants have closed either permanently or long term, adding that the sector is on track to lose $240B in sales this year. A number of factors have made it especially difficult for eateries, which tend to operate on thin margins even in the best of times.
What else is happening...
Unity (NYSE:U) to raise $1.3B in IPO, prices 25M shares above range.
New York files civil charges against J&J (NYSE:JNJ) over opioids.
Walmart (NYSE:WMT) hikes pay for about 165,000 hourly employees.
Dave & Buster's (NASDAQ:PLAY) stumbles on bankruptcy speculation.
Proposed Boeing (NYSE:BA) 737 MAX safety upgrades endorsed by NTSB.
Nat gas tumbles by most in two years after stockpile gain.

Tweet slays Market

For Trading October 7th
Reversal by Tweet
“No Deal Until After I’m Re-elected”
Today’s market was split early with the DJIA higher and the NASDAQ lower. It made some headway all day, never quite catching up, and then after “THE TWEET” we reversed hard and the DJIA finished -375.88 (1.34%), NASDAQ -177.88 (1.57%), S&P 500 -47.68 (1.4%), the Russell held better only down 4.67 (.30%) and Transports -82.85 (.72%). My guess is that the president’s misdirection play will be reversed when it politically suits him, and the market will rally again as he tries everything in the book, except of course, actual action, to get that second term. Market internals were negative, but not terrible with NYSE just 4:3 down and the NASDAQ 10:7, with all but 3 DJIA stocks lower. BA was the leader on the downside trimming 77 DP’s off the index and PG and DD, lower by less than $1, and CSCO unchanged.

SECTORS: There was some good news for LEVI. The estimates were for a loss of $ .22/share and when they reported a profit of $ .08, increased margins and 52% growth in Ecommerce the stock took off. The last 10 days had the stock moving higher from $11.91 to today’s high of $15.27 before closing a bit lower at $14.74. In extended hours, the stock hit $16.78 and is currently $16.20 +1.19 (7.86%). The news for Social Capital’s SPAC III (IPOC) was evidently a disappointment. Chalmath Palihapitiya gave the story on CNBC before the open and the stock did nothing but head south. It closed $10.95- 1.73 (13.64%), but the big surprise to me was that Social Capital II also fell, closing $17.49 -2.22 (11.26%) and it has a completely different merger going on in the real estate business. Defies logic, but since we’re in both, I’m staying long. And the HOME RUN of the Day, PPSI, Pioneer Power Solutions, a little know company with the only recent news was a Form 4 (insider buying) filed in August for a purchase 1,000 shares of the stock at an average price of $1.40. The stock was trading $2.91 +1.34 pre-market (86%) and at the end of the day it was $5.83 +4.28 (273%) and in late trading it hit $9.43 and closed $6.20 +4.63 (294.9%). Quite a day for a stock with no news!!

Merger Monday

For Trading September 29TH
MERGER MONDAY!
BROAD RALLY
Today’s market started off on the upside and spent the rest of the day comfortably up, in fact the DJIA +410.10 (1.5%), was the only one of the averages that came off the highs at the close, finishing 140 or so below it. NASDAQ was +203.97 (1.87%), S&P 500 +53.14 (1.61%), the Russell +35.48, the biggest gainer (2.41%) and the DJ Transports +170.95 (1.52%). What was most impressive to me was the fact that the Mega-cap and FAANG names weren’t weak, but definitely not racing higher all day. The other interesting point was that all the indexes closed over last weeks highs! The market internals were actually pretty good with the NYSE 5:1 and NASDAQ 3:1; volume was light (Jewish holiday) and the DJIA was solidly positive with only 3 of the 30 lower and all less than $1. BA was the biggest winner adding 66 DP’s. Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. It is informative and allows me to share insights as the market is open and moving. The link is: https://discord.gg/ATvC7YZ and I will be there and active from before the open and all day. It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 3000 members. I also returned to my radio show today with a great live interview with the Chief Medical Officer of JANONE (JAN) and it was a great show. This is the link to the audio recording including my discussion of the market and the very exciting story of JAN’s phenomenal NON-OPIOID Pain Med! SECTORS: There wasn’t a lot of sector news, but we did have 2 deals; Devon Energy (DVN) and WPX Energy in a merger of equals that the street liked sending both of them higher. DVN $9.80 +.98 (11%) and WPX $5.17 +.73. DVN has spent the last 10 years moving steadily lower from $122 to a low of $4.70, and WPX not quite so bad from $25 to $1.94. I guess when you compare -92% vs. -95% there really aren’t any winners.
Also, in the M&A arena, we have Cleveland Cliffs,13.37 +1.28 (10.6% CLF buying the US assets of MT, Arcelor Mittal for $1.4 billion. The street liked this one too, CLF $6.56 +.68 (11.5%) and MT $13.37 +1.28 (10.6%), although this one is cash and stock, so it’s hard to quote a valuation. It wasn’t all good news, with 2 smallish biotech’s, INO and EIGR both having problems with their Covid-19 vaccine trials. INO, up from $1.95 this year to peak at $33.49 had already fallen back to close Friday $16.94 opened the day at $10.67 and closed $12.14 -4.80 (28%), and EIGR with a January high near $15 and Friday close $9.89 opened the day $9.47 and then sold down to $7.67 and closed $7.96 -1.93 (19.5%). On the upside, in a major way, was Piedmont Lithium (PLL) taking the HOMERUN OF THE DAY disclosing a 5-year contract with TESLA for the mineral Spodumene, a component of lithium. The stock had closed $11.00 and opened $36.66, traded up to $54.50 and finished the day $37.00 +$26 (236.36%). Also, of interest, according to my service, the stock last traded Thursday, 9/17, so unlike many deals that “leak” this was as clean as a whistle. One more small one, Oxbridge Re Holdings, a Cayman re-insurance company that shows absolutely no news and has spent the last 5 years going from $7.76 to a low of $ .55, closed $1.07 Friday and opened $1.55 and proceeded to move up to $9.62 and back down to close $2.95 +1.88 (175%). I’m sure we’ll hear more on that one tomorrow!

OIL, $40.48 +.35, Oil was higher all day. I am looking for about another $1.00 or so before I would consider selling it for a correction. The stocks were HIGHER with XLE $30.89 +.71 (2.35%).
GOLD $1,882.30 +16.00, opened LOWER but and gave up most of the recent gains and finished well off the low but slightly higher. I have closed out the NEM calls at a loss. I will take another look after I’ve seen some sideways action.

Dead Battery

For Trading September 24TH
NASDAQ WORST PERFORMER, AGAIN!
BATTERY DAY is a DUD
ABSOLUTE LUNACY
Today’s market started off on the upside hitting the high of the day by 9:45 and started to fail. By 10:30 we had moved below unchanged and spent the next 3 hours going sideways to down, and then the real selling began, taking the DJIA to below last weeks low and after a minor rally moved down to close -525.05 (1.9%), NASDAQ -330.65 (3.02%), S&P 500 -78.65 (2.07%), the Russell -45.59 (3.04%) and the DJ Transports -119.44 (1.06%). Volume on the NYSE was roughly 7:1 down, close to climactic, but not quite, and the A/D was 7.8:1 on NYSE and 5:1 on NASDAQ. Housing price index was unchanged @ +1% as expected and mortgage apps. Increased 6.8% following a -2.5% last week. Covid-19 numbers are on the rise again with France the big winner (loser?) on number of new cases and deaths.

SECTORS: The lunacy of this market knows no bounds. A company added a “EV Charger” business and it rallies from a prior close of $1.05 to a high of $46.67 and finishes the day @ $14.00 +1233%. This is the same kind of activity that occurred in 1999 when all you had to do was add “.com” to the company name and settle back to watch the fireworks. In reality, SPI Energy (SPI) is a company that had a high of $1,800 at the start of 2016. That may seem pretty extreme for a stock that closed $1.05 before the news, but it actually “reverse split” twice, 1:10 in 2017 and 2018. So, if you owned 100 shares in early 2017 at $20, you’d first go to 10 shares, and then again in 2018 down to 1 share. So, 100 @ $20, or $2000 worth of stock, you’d now have 1 share worth $14.00 at the close today. Talk about destruction of equity! No as bad as some, but not a great return. Caveat Emptor!...in spades. New Group:

WMT vs AMZN?

For Trading JULY 8th
JOLTs 5.4 vs. 5 Million
NVAX gets $1.6B from BARDA
Today’s market got off to a very soft start in the DJIA but not so much in the NASDAQ and S&P-500, with the DJIA starting off -240 and managing a rally only as far as -125 before spending several hours going sideways until the last hour of trading when the NASDAQ and S&P ran out of steam and fell below the close and the selloff resumed. It’s never a good thing when and overbought index makes a new all-time high and then closes down and on the lows. The DJIA was -396.85 (1.51%), NASDAQ -89.76 (.86%), S&P 500 -34.30 (1.08%), the Russell -26.89 (1.86%) and the DJ Transports -108 (1.1%). The internals were 3:1 down on NYSE and 2.5:1 on NASDAQ with volume on the NYSE 2:1 down also. The DJIA was 28 down and only 2 up with WMT the big gainer +55 DP’s and on the downside, BA-62, GS -55, and UNH -43DP’s. Even with the good JOLTs number, this market is just over-extended and tired. The stat I mentioned in tonight’s video about the S&P is very telling, I think, with the S&P only 2% off its high, the median S&P stock is down 11%. This market has simply gotten too narrow and it will correct.
We sold half of the remaining NEM 7/17 $60’s bought @ 1.55 and added to last Friday @ $1.30 for an average of $1.47 triggered a 100% Up Rule sale at $2.94, and today’s sale was @ $3.20. They closed today $3.20. We also own a position in SLV 8/21 17 calls @ $ .74, and they closed $ .75, and we also added a spread using the NEM 8/65 / 70 calls at a $1.30 debit.
Tonight’s closing comment video https://youtu.be/5afUNy48sFI
Our Discord Forum link is on the video description..
SECTORS: The FAANG names all finished near the lows, several like MSFT coming off a new all-time high and closing down on the day. Not a good sign if they follow-thru to the downside tomorrow. Also having trouble was CCL, who has had to cancel several cruises for Q4 and Q1 2021. It closed $14.57 -1.04 (6.7%). Add to that, the UAL report that it is giving warnings that it will be laying off “10’2 of thousands of employees.” UAL finished $32.55 -2.66 (7.55%). These two companies do not operate in a vacuum, so both groups are in jeopardy, again. Novavax (NVAX) got a $1.6billion grant from BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority) to help it along in it’s search for a workable vaccine. The stock, up from $8 as late as the end of February had worked its way up to $85 last month and opened today $104 and traded as high as $111.77 and finished $104.56 +25.12 (31.63%). Don’t get too crazy with this one, this is not its first rodeo. In 2015 it was trading $300 before it had a failure on a different vaccine and the stock fell to $80 before a rally and then in the week of 9/16/2016 it fell further from $169.80 to $23.20 and then on to the adjusted (1:20 reverse) low around $4.00. We’ll hope for a better outcome this time around. Walmart was the big winner on a RECODE that said they are ready to launch Walmart +, to compete with Amazon Prime for same day grocery delivery and next day for other products. Its move today added 55 DP’s to the averages. I don’t think it’s a big deal since for the same money, with Prime you get streaming too. And the margins on groceries are razor thin.
FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was MIXED with TSN -.67, BGS +.70, FLO -.03, CPB -.11, CAG +.54, MDLZ -.22, KHC +.22, CALM +.03, JJSF -1.43, SAFM +.54, HRL -.14, SJM +.18, PPC -.34, KR -.03, and PBJ $31.56 +.06 (.19%).

CANNABIS: was LOWER with TLRY -.13, CGC -.40, CRON -.19, GWPH +2.93, ACB +.17, CURLF -.07, KERN -.62 and MJ $13.08 -.01 (.08%).

RETAIL: was LOWER with M +.03, JWN -.58, KSS -.72, DDS -.88, WMT +9.11 (7.66%), TGT -1.40, TJX -1.84, RL -2.49, UAA -.41, LULU -6.66, TPR -.51, CPRI -.18 and XRT $43.78 -.43 (.97%).
FAANG and Big Cap: were MIXED with GOOGL -7.40, AMZN -44.69, AAPL +1.06, FB -.91, NFLX +.69, NVDA +3.06, TSLA +9.42, BABA -2.60, BIDU -4.54, CMG -10.92, CAT -2.03, BA -8.57, DIS -.53 and XLK $106.34 -.77 (.72%).
FINANCIALS were LOWER with GS – 7.91, JPM2.52, BAC -.63, MS -1.32, C -1.53, PNC -3.15, AIG -1.36, TRV -2.45, AXP -3.48, V -3.13, and XLF $22.93 -.48 (2.05%).
OIL, $40.62 -.01. Oil was lower in last night’s trading before we rallied in the morning. I mentioned in last night’s charts with comments section in the Weekly Strategies letter, prices are trying to work higher towards $45.00. We needed a close over the previous high close of $40.83 and while we were there, we sold off to close below that number. The stocks were higher with XLE $36.26 -1.19 (3.18%).
GOLD $1,809.80 +16.40. It was a continuation rally and a new recovery high OF $1807.70 Last night I said “we’ve moved $50 since the low on Friday and while the trend and momentum are positive, we may have to test 1790 to consolidate our gains.” Unfortunately, we pulled back to 1,767 instead. We rallied a bit and finished only slightly better. We bought back the 3rd and final lot of NEM @ $58.86. And, we also added a half position in NEM 7/17 60 calls @ $1.55, and additional 50% @ $1.30 on Friday. We sold half on the 100% Up Rule @ $2.94 and half of what was left today @ $3.20, we closed $3.20 + .80 today.
BITCOIN: closed $9,290 -65. After trading back to 8985 we rallied back to close – only $5. Since last week we have closed between 9200 – 92.85 every day with narrow ranges and today was a good start to move higher. A break over 10,000 still sends us higher. We added 350 shares of GBTC @ $10.02 to our position of 400 @ $8.06, bringing our average price to $8.97. GBTC closed $9.76 - .19 today.
Tomorrow is another day.

Today’s market got off to a slightly higher start on the combination of CPI data and the futures, with all major indexes higher. The NASDAQ was the leader, by far, gaining almost the same point value as the DJIA on an index 60% smaller. At the close the DJIA was +289.93 (1.05%), NASDAQ +229.42 (2.13%), S&P 500 +46.66 (1.4%), the Russell +8.15 (.52%), and the DJ Transports +46.57 (.43%). Market internals were weak with the NYSE only 9:5 UP and the NASDAQ 9:7, and lower volume than yesterday. The DJIA was the same as yesterday, 23:7 but almost the entire gain was in 4 names, AAPL +100DP’s, HD & UNH +46 each, and MSFT +40DP’s while on the downside we had BA-32 and AXP -10DP’s.

LYFT in particular was just full of bad news telling shareholders that if the Court of Appeals did not strike down the State of California’s ruling that requires their drivers to be considered employees, that they would suspend all operations in Calif., 16% of their total rideshare business. The stock, already down from its high of $88.60 traded as low as $29.75 and is currently $30.10 -.42. Cisco (CSCO) reported a loss and gave poor guidance and this is the glaring difference between “Old” tech and “New” tech. While CSCO has fallen from an all-time high of $76, and a recent high of $58 to close today $48.10 + .91, it traded down to $44.77 and is $45.04 -3.05 or 6.34%. “New” tech stocks like AMD, NVDA, and AVGO are all at new all-time highs and up triple-digits this year. The biggest news of the late day was the announcement that TESLA (TSLA) declared a 5:1 stock split. While this is really just straight arithmetic, it does create some demand for the shares now, since when the stock split becomes effective at the end of August you would have 5 times the shares at 1/5 of the price. But it does promote the purchase of “round lots” as opposed to “odd lots.” Does it really increase demand? Not really, but most stocks (like AAPL) do seem to rise on the news. TSLA certainly did, closing $1,554,76 +180.37 (13.1%). FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was HIGHER with TSN +.54, BGS +.53, FLO +.34, CPB +1.19, CAG +.75, MDLZ +.83, KHC +.72, CALM +.23, JJSF +.39, SAFM +.35, HRL +.62, SJM +2.25, PPC -.15, KR +.24, and PBJ $33.89 +.57 (1.69%).

OIL, $42.67 +1.06. Oil was higher in last night’s trading before we rallied in the morning on news of production cutbacks from Iraq. The stocks were HIGHER with XLE $38.58 +.38 (.99%).
GOLD $1,949 +2.70 was a dramatic sell-off taking the gold down as low as $1,874.00 before a rally back to $1,961. While I like the gold down here, I will have to see how it trades for a day or two. I am still a bull on the metal.
BITCOIN: closed $11,665 +230. After breaking out over $10,000 we have had a “running correction” pushing prices toward $12,000, reaching a recovery high of $12220 yesterday. We had added 350 shares of GBTC @ $10.02 to our position of 400 @ $8.06, bringing our average price to $8.97, but sold 250 shares today @ $13.93. GBTC closed $13.11 +.56 today.

Today’s market WAS A SPLIT PERSONALITY RIGHT FROM THE START. While the S&P and NASDAQ worked higher, the DJIA was lower. At the close the DJIA was -86.11 (.31%), NASDAQ +110.43 (1%), S&P 500 +9.14 (.27%), the Russell +7.59 (.48%), and the DJK Transports -6.60 (.06%). The Bond market was also a split affair with the short end lower and longer term slightly higher, flattening the yield curve. Market internals were pretty much neutral with the NYSE 1:1 and the NASDAQ just 9:7 even with the rise. The DJIA was only 11 up and 19 down with the financials the weakest and HD, WMT, and V higher. On the downside we had BA -42, GS -34, UNH -22, AXP, JPM, and TRV all -19 DP’s. Tomorrow we have HD, WMT, and AAP earnings tomorrow before the open.

NEW S&P-500 CLOSING HIGH!
HOUSING STARTS +22%
U.S.$$ INDEX FALLS, Again!!
Today’s market WAS A SPLIT PERSONALITY RIGHT FROM THE START, again. While the S&P and NASDAQ worked higher, the DJIA was lower. The main reason, from my point of view was the incredible runup in the major earnings reporting companies. In the forefront were HD and WMT, who both had great numbers, but also had solid gains over the past week, and then again last night and this morning in the pre-open trading. The gains were overdone and the HD, which traded as high as $299 (preopen) could only manage $290.59 in the real world and then continued to fall; and WMT hitting $144.75 (preopen) could only manage $137.63 and then broke yesterday’s low of $133.85 and finished lower on the day. The DJIA finished -66.84 (.24%), NASDAQ +81.12 (.73%), S&P +7.79 (.23%), the Russell -15.70 (.99%), and DJ Transports -87.82 (.80%). Market internals were also negative with NYSE 3:2 Down as were the NASDAQ 5:3 and volume was light. The DJIA was 19 down and 11 up and there were no winners or losers bigger than 25 DP’s.

SECTORS: As mentioned, the two biggest disappointments were HD and WMT, both of which were higher pre-open, and finished lower on the day with HD actually making a lower low than Monday. AMZN made a new high close although the all-time high trade is still $3344.29 on a day that it reversed and finished lower by $240. This looks like a solid consolidation formation and a new breakout to the upside. TSLA was again a big winner with both a new high and a new high close at $1887.09 and a high of $1823.90, even though it too traded higher in the extended hours hitting $1939.00. On the downside we had TEVA, being sued by the US government over an 8 year period of illegal kickbacks and it too finished lower after trading down to $9.80 but rallied back to finish $10.48 -1.11 (9.58%). Sorrento Therapeutics also fell on news that their CFO has been discharged immediately (never a good thing) and SRNE closed $12.28 +.18 (1.49%) and fell as low as $10.28 and finished $10.62 – 1.66.

Another New High for NASDAQ
Today’s market got off to a positive start even though the ADP payroll number, expected to be +1 million jobs came in at a meager +167,000. This was before the good ISM numbers came in well above both expectations and last months number. By the end of the day the DJIA was +373.05 (1.39%), NASDAQ +57.24 (.52%), S&P 500 +21.26 (.64%), the Russell the big winner +29.02 (1.91%), and the DJ Transports +128.75 (1.28%). Market internals were a sold 2:1 on both NYSE and NASDAQ and NYSE volume was better at 3:1 up. Bond markets were slightly lower with the long end actually gaining a bit and steepening the yield curve. The U.S. Dollar index continues to fall and I will be working on an advisory for the Weekly Insights letter for ways to play the weak dollar using ETFs.

ADP Number a MAJOR MISS

Stocks are set to end the week on a high note after four of the biggest tech stocks - Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) - reported quarterly results that beat high expectations. Apple easily exceeded estimates on the top and bottom lines, and announced a four-for-one stock split, sending shares past the $400 threshold in after-hours trading. Amazon's sales soared, and operating income nearly doubled compared with the big drop analysts had expected. Facebook posted 11% revenue growth and issued stronger-than-expected sales guidance for the current quarter. Results from Google's parent were a bit murkier, showing the company's first-ever year-over-year decline in advertising revenue, but sales from its cloud-computing segment came in well above expectations. Big Tech has been Wall Street's mainstay this year, and the latest quarterly results look to accelerate that trend. Amazon and Apple are up 65% and 31%, respectively, in 2020, while Facebook and Alphabet each have gained more than 14% over the period. With all four stocks moving higher in after-hours trading, the tech titans likely will add more than $200 billion to their combined market value.
U.S. economy shrank by a third in Q2
The Commerce Department said U.S. gross domestic product collapsed at a 32.9% annualized rate in the second quarter, the steepest decline since the government started keeping records in 1947, as COVID-19 crushed consumer and business spending. Meanwhile, in a sign of a faltering jobs market, the number of workers applying for initial unemployment benefits rose for the second straight week, to 1.43 million, after nearly four months of decreases following a late-March peak. The Q2 economic contraction came as states imposed lockdowns in March and April to contain the coronavirus and then lifted restrictions in May and June, allowing growth to resume. Economists expect the third quarter to show growth, but the summer rise in infections likely will temper gains.
Senate fails to advance jobless benefits extension
Meanwhile, no signs of progress are evident in talks between Republicans and Democrats over a new coronavirus relief bill. The U.S. Senate failed yesterday to advance an effort to extend a $200 per week supplement to unemployment insurance benefits. Senate Republicans and the White House had sought to cut the supplement from $600 through September, after which those collecting unemployment benefits would get 70% of their previous wages when combined with state benefits. While much of the focus has been on the expiration of the additional $600-per-week of unemployment benefits, an eviction moratorium is receiving increasing attention as well.
China factory activity expands for fifth straight month
China’s official manufacturing purchasing managers' index came in better than expected, rising to 51.1 in July from 50.9 in June for its highest reading since March. July marked the fifth consecutive month that the closely watched measure of China's factory activity topped the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction. Combined with China's official non-manufacturing purchasing managers' index, which indicated a slight deceleration in the service sector, the data suggests China's factories have returned to pre-coronavirus levels but consumer demand remains much weaker, which means inventory is piling up.
Chinese-backed hackers reportedly targeted Moderna for vaccine data
China rejects charges that hackers linked to its government targeted Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) to steal data related to research on a coronavirus vaccine. Citing an unnamed U.S. security official, Reuters reported yesterday that Chinese hackers targeted the U.S. biotech firm earlier this year. Moderna said it had been in contact with the FBI and was made aware of the suspected "information reconnaissance activities" by a hacking group mentioned in last week's Justice Department indictment, where two Chinese nationals were accused of spying on the U.S., including three unnamed U.S.-based targets involved in medical research to fight COVID-19. The two other unnamed medical research companies mentioned in the Justice Department indictment are described as biotech companies based in California and Maryland - descriptions that could fit Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) and Novavax (NASDAQ:NVAX). Amazon's $10 billion Internet satellite plan wins FCC approval
While overshadowed by the company's earnings, Amazon.com's (AMZN) tech ambitions got a boost as the FCC approved its $10B plan to put thousands of satellites in the sky to provide high-speed Internet to unserved and underserved areas. The company's Project Kuiper - using 3,200 low Earth orbit satellites - would compete in that area with the Starlink project at SpaceX (SPACE).
Australia to force Google, Facebook to pay for news
Australia will become the first country in the world to force Facebook (FB) and Google (GOOG, GOOGL) to pay publishers for the news content featured on its sites. It will give the companies three months to negotiate fair pay with media businesses there, a move to ensure competition and consumer protection as well as a sustainable media landscape. Other companies are likely to be targeted for similar moves by Australia's government later.
U.K. fraud office charges Airbus subsidiary over Saudi deal
The U.K.'s major economic crimes investigator has charged Airbus' (OTCPK:EADSY) subsidiary GPT Special Project Management and three individuals in connection with a defense contract the country arranged with Saudi Arabia. Airbus says the Serious Fraud Office's investigation related to contractual arrangements that predated its acquisition of the subsidiary. The charges represent a step forward in one of the SFO's most politically sensitive probes, which has been viewed as a potential threat to the U.K.'s relationship with the Saudis. Listen on the go! A daily podcast of Wall Street Breakfast will be available by 8:00 a.m. on Seeking Alpha, iTunes, Stitcher and Spotify.
More Wall Street Breakfast Podcasts » Shares of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) - worth nearly $5T in combined market capitalization - added to gains yesterday even as their chief executives defended themselves in Congress against antitrust allegations. The real test will come today, when the Big Tech companies report Q2 results after the market close. On watch will be figures and trends in e-commerce, streaming, advertising, search, app services, social media and cloud computing. Will investors start rethinking the prices that they're paying for the stocks or will their market position during the coronavirus pandemic justify their valuations?
Antitrust hearing roundup
Rep. David Cicilline (D., R.I.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee, kicked off the hearing by declaring: "Our founders would not bow before a king. Nor should we bow before the emperors of the online economy." That set the tone of five hours of grilling the Big Tech CEOs over their business practices. On the competition front, the biggest questions centered around Amazon's leveraging of seller data to introduce competing products, as well as the revelation of Mark Zuckerberg's emails about the concept of buying startups in order to "neutralize a competitor."
Traders get busy
Futures are kicking off a packed session in the red, with contracts tied to the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq down about 1%, as Mark Meadows said the White House and Democrats were "nowhere close" on a stimulus deal. Q2 GDP figures today will likely show an annualized contraction of 34.1% last quarter, while the latest weekly unemployment claims are also expected to show an increase to 1.45M, before enhanced federal benefits expire on Saturday. After the close, four of the market's biggest stocks will report earnings within a single hour, in a move that could cause significant volatility in after-hours trading and again on Friday. On the coronavirus front, the U.S. death toll topped 150K, marking the highest official figure in the world.
FOMC meeting
Solid gains for indexes were seen Wednesday as the Fed left interest rates near zero and pledged to maintain stimulative measures. "The path forward for the economy is extraordinarily uncertain, and will depend in large part on our success in keeping the virus in check," Jerome Powell declared. "We're not even thinking about thinking about raising rates and it will take continued support for both monetary and fiscal policy." He also said the Fed "has no intention to buy equities" after recently purchasing corporate and municipal bonds.
Both sides of the Atlantic
Today is not only the busiest day for earnings in the U.S. European firms worth more than $2T, as well as 60 companies in the Stoxx 600 Index, reported Q2 results overnight. Highlights: AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN) shares rose 3% premarket on strong drug sales, while Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) shares inched down after narrowly escaping a loss despite a $17B writedown and one of the oil industry's most brutal quarters. Credit Suisse (NYSE:CS) simplified its investment bank structure, AB InBev (NYSE:BUD) booked a $2.5B writedown and Airbus (OTCPK:EADSY) is keeping production rates down until 2022. Over in Asia, Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) announced its Q2 operating profit jumped 23% and forecast demand for mobile devices to recover gradually in next half of the year.
World's biggest smartphone vendor
Huawei has overtaken Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) to become the No. 1 smartphone player in the world, an ambition it has had for several years, after taking second place from Apple (AAPL) back in 2018. The Chinese vendor shipped 55.8M devices in the second quarter, down 5% Y/Y, according to research firm Canalys, while Samsung shipped 53.7M smartphones, a 30% plunge versus the prior year. However, analysts are questioning whether Huawei's position is sustainable given the fact that over 70% of Huawei's sales in the second quarter came from China while its overseas markets took a hit. Go deeper: Qualcomm strikes patent deal with Huawei.
Trade deal targets
By the end of the first half of this year, China had bought about 23% of the total purchase target of more than $170B for goods in 2020, according to Bloomberg, which based its calculations on Chinese Customs Administration data. While trade has increased over the past eight weeks, with Chinese companies booking more than $2.5B in U.S. soy purchases, imports really have to speed up in the second half of 2020 to hit trade deal goals. China may still not violate the deal if it misses the target due to the coronavirus (the trade pact grants flexibility in the event of "a natural disaster or other unforeseeable event").
